Some of my favorite family tree commissions come from overseas because they allow me to learn about different cities on our beautiful planet. This painting was a special commission from London for a father’s 80th birthday in Gdansk, Poland. Searching for ideas to use for the painting background allowed me to discover the city’s stunning architecture. My client initially asked me to set the scene against the historic Gdansk shipyard, where her father worked, but I felt the artwork needed a bit more color. So I also used the city’s vibrant, colorful buildings as the backdrop for her mother.
I depicted both parents sitting in chairs on the bank of a famous canal in Gdansk. I painted the father holding cards and a glass of whiskey, and his wife holding a book. Their three daughters sit on tree branches above, each with a meaningful touch: one holding hiking sticks, another cradling a beloved cat, and the third, a chef, presenting a seafood dish. Spouses and grandchildren are woven into the design as names on leaves, creating a heartfelt, multi-generational tribute.
