This charming painting, commissioned by a thoughtful mother-in-law for her daughter’s 10th wedding anniversary, captures a family of four in a warm, whimsical woodland scene. I painted the couple seated in Adirondack chairs, holding hands, with their wedding portrait – a nostalgic nod to their decade of love at the heart of the painting. Above them, their two children perch on the branches, each with a beloved treasure: the daughter cradles her favorite teddy bear, while the son holds his cherished toy tractor, his favorite blankie draped nearby.
The backdrop brings their family home to life, featuring their lush New England backyard where turkeys, deer, and hawks roam, reflecting the wildlife they get to see all the time. I chose the fall as the setting for the painting because that’s when the couple got married. An elegant banner crowns the painting, inscribed with the family’s last name and wedding date, adding a touch of timeless sophistication. To honor their roots, I wrote the names of the couple’s parents on the tree’s roots, grounding the artwork in their shared heritage.
