One of the best parts of my job is learning new things about different cultures from around the world. I get excited whenever I get a family tree illustration order for a couple with an exotic ethnic background. In this particular case, the couple was from the Philippines. While more often than not I get commissioned by relatives to do a family tree painting, this illustration was commissioned by the coworkers of the woman the artwork was for. It was a surprise gift for their boss’ 50th birthday. And this meant that I couldn’t ask the couple directly what elements I should include in the painting. So I had to do a bit of research on my own. Like figuring out what type of tree to use for the family tree itself.
Luckily I stumbled upon a very beautiful blooming tree common to the Philippines called the Katmon tree. I decided to go with that because the flowers of the Katmon tree have 5 petals which corresponded to the number of people in the family. Usually, I write the names of the family members on the tree leaves, but in this case, I wrote them on the flower petals.
As a Ukrainian American, I know how much my Ukrainian heritage means to me. As I was painting I thought the same applied to the family I was creating the family tree illustration for. So I decided to incorporate a flag of their native country into the painting. The Filipino flag is very beautiful and the best part is that visually it goes really well with the American flag. I depicted both at each end of the family banner.
In my family tree artwork, I always make sure to add details that describe the family members’ hobbies or professions. Luckily the birthday girl’s coworkers were able to supply me with these details. They told me exactly what each one of her kids was into. I found it very touching! I think it’s wonderful when coworkers know so much about each other’s lives. Makes for a great work environment!
