My client supplied me with the photos of her parents’ beloved cottage, and I used their favorite retreat to set the scene for the painting. I painted a walnut tree, which grows in their yard as their family tree, and used their garden for the rest of the background. I recreated the setting with authenticity, adding a whimsical touch by adding the koi fish from their pond playfully holding a banner displaying their names and wedding date.
Personal touches brought their story to life. I depicted the mother knitting, a nod to her favorite hobby, while I painted her twin grandsons wearing hats she knitted for them, a charming detail from real life. I painted the father holding a video camera because he is known by everyone in the family as the family videographer. All other family members also held objects that the parents associated them with. This illustration wove a tale of a tight-knit (pun intended) family who revel in time spent at their parents’ summer cottage, enjoying their time together filled with laughter and love.
This painting, rich with intimate details, became a vibrant tribute to the couple’s 50 years together.
