60th anniversary gift for parents

This family tree painting was no exception. If anything it even went further with personal details than some of my other works. My clients usually leave it up to me to choose the style of the bench their parents sit on. In this case, even the bench was customized. Actually, it is a swing rather than a bench. My client told me that his parents purchased a porch swing and provided me with product photos of the swing. So that’s what I ended up using in the painting.

One of my favorite details in the painting is the starry sky. There are several reasons why I chose to use a night sky for the illustration. First of all, since it was the couple’s 60th or Diamond wedding anniversary I thought that the stars could represent diamonds. Secondly, my client sent me a photo of a sunset over the mountains where his parents live. It made sense to blend the sunset into a dark sky. Lastly, my client’s mother was wearing a blue blouse with white dots in one of her photos and it reminded me of the night sky.  I was very pleased with how her blouse ended up matching the sky in the background.

For the family tree itself, my client went with a maple tree. Because his parents’ anniversary is in the fall we decided to use colorful foliage which contrasted nicely with the sky.

In the foreground I added objects that represented my client’s parents’ hobbies: gardening, golfing, reading, and puzzles.

The artwork was done in watercolor.
