Personalized gifts are always the best gifts, especially when it comes to anniversary gifts for parents. My work is about being able to translate a family story into visual art. My goal is to make each one of my family trees very personal for the couple it is being gifted to. I believe that a couple’s cultural heritage is one of the mast important details a family tree should reflect. After all, our roots are the foundation our lives are built on. Not to mention that a century (or two!) from now the couple’s descendants will truly appreciate learning about their ancestors’ heritage. That’s why I’m always appreciative when my clients want to include their ethnic heritage in the artwork.
In this case the couple I was creating a family tree illustration for were Indian. Their daughters commissioned the painting from me as a unique wedding anniversary gift for their parents. For the background, they requested the scenery of their parents’ hometown back in India with the beach, palm trees, and colorful bushes. I also got to paint my clients’ mother in a sari. That was probably one of my favorite details in the painting since I happen to love Indian saris. I matched the blue in the sari to the sky in the background which ‘tied’ the illustration together.
To personalize the painting I added objects that symbolize the couple’s hobbies and occupations. My clients’ mom loves baking and arranging flowers. So I added a cake and a flower vase next to her. My clients’ father is a doctor who loves reading and cricket. For him, I painted a stack of books, a cricket bat with a ball, and an old-fashioned doctor’s bag with a red cross on it.
