A Sentimental 70th Birthday Gift for a Woman: Custom Family Tree Painting for Best Friend

I created this painting for a client’s best friend who was turning 70. She is a woman whose family and friendships define her as a person. Breaking from my usual couple-centered designs, I placed the birthday woman at the heart of the composition, with her husband and best friend—my client, also her son’s godmother flanking her portrait in balanced symmetry. Her children and their spouses filled equal-sized portrait frames, while smaller portraits of her grandchildren adorned the upper branches, creating a vibrant and visually well-balanced family tree. This inclusive approach redefined “family,” embracing those bound by love, not just lineage.
To honor the woman’s Ukrainian heritage, I wove in meaningful cultural details. As a Kyiv native now living in Germany, her story was reflected through Ukrainian and German flags on a personalized family name banner, with the blue-and-yellow Ukrainian palette echoed in her family portraits’ backgrounds. The family tree itself was a chestnut, Kyiv’s iconic symbol, set against a backdrop of the city’s famous landmarks, tying her roots to her present.
