As a Ukrainian woman artist, I infuse every Ukrainian heritage family tree painting with the soul of Ukraine’s traditions, creating a deeply personal gift for any Ukrainian woman who treasures her roots. Symbols like radiant poppies, beautiful sunflowers, rustic traditional wicker fences, embroidered vyshyvanka blouses, and intricate floral headdresses weave authentic cultural threads into each artwork.
For this special family tree painting, I honored my client’s roots quite literally—writing the names of her parents’ Ukrainian hometowns on the tree’s roots, creating a true “Ukrainian Roots” tribute.
This painting depicts a whimsical “poppy tree,” its curling branches inspired by Frida Kahlo’s magical realism – a shared love between me and my client. Set against Ukraine’s blue and yellow flag colors in the background, the painting features the sun and moon, another tribute to Frida Kahlo. Deeply personal objects from her home brought my client’s world into the painting: a striped antique chair, an elephant statue, a red umbrella, a black rooster in a round frame, which was an actual painting done by her mother. These details transformed the artwork into a vibrant reflection of her life, ideal for a Ukrainian woman who values sentiment.
Each family member depicted in the painting shone with individuality. I painted my client, a yoga teacher, in a yoga pose, wearing a top she designed and a poppy-adorned Ukrainian headdress. Her son, a basketball lover, was captured mid-throw in his favorite team’s jersey, while her niece sparkled dressed as a whimsical fairy with delicate wings. Even her black cat joined the fun, playing bongos to nod to my client’s hobby. Sunflowers spilled over a wicker fence, and Soyuzivka—a Ukrainian resort in New York where her parents met—was lovingly recreated from an old photo, adding nostalgic warmth.
