70th birthday gift for mom she’ll cherish forever
So your mom is turning 70 and you’re desperately searching for a unique gift worthy of this amazing woman who’s done so much for you… Of course, you would like to find a spectacular gift to bring tears of joy to your mother’s eyes… But what? Your mom’s 70th birthday is a big milestone and the gift needs to be both meaningful and personal. It has to special and one-of-a-kind. One of my clients decided that getting her mother a custom family tree painting was just such a gift. I’m very grateful that she chose my family tree art for her gift idea. Not only I absolutely loved working on this project, but I also had an amazing interaction with my client.
So many artists create art on commission, but never really get to know their customers. It’s so very different in my case. In order to create a personalized family tree for someone I have to get personal. As an artist who illustrates a family’s history, I have to learn about the family I’m painting the artwork for. I spend a lot of time communicating with my clients and getting to know all kinds of details about them and their loved ones. I get to laugh at their family stories, I get fascinated by their family’s heritage, and sometimes I get to cry when they share with me some of the hardships their family went through. If only I could explain how incredibly amazing it feels to be trusted with all this personal information. Not to mention, it feels even more amazing to be entrusted with creating a piece of art that will stay in the family for generations to come.
Detailed descriptions of the family translate into fun details in a family tree painting
I always ask my clients to be as detailed as possible when describing their relatives. The more I know the more I have to choose from to make a painting unique. It doesn’t mean that I need a full biography for everyone in the family. But I do need a few sentences to get a feel for who the person is to give me ideas of the best way to portray him or her.
I get clients from all walks of life. Some of them I have to guide. Others send me excel spreadsheets and graphs a minute after they place their order. My client who ordered the painting for her mom’s 70th birthday is a lawyer. I loved how she gave me precisely the type of information I needed. Very concise and straight to the point. I didn’t have to wreck my brains trying to figure out what I’m painting. We spend some time emailing back and forth and agreed on a plan of action the very first evening. The painting ‘rolled’ onto canvas from my paintbrush like a dream. It came out exactly as I have envisioned it: highly detailed, fun, bright, and slightly whimsical.
The best part was hearing back from my client after she gave the painting to her mom. She told me that her mother had tears in her eyes when she opened her gift. Hearing things like this is what makes my job as a family tree artist worthwhile. How many other professionals can put ‘I bring happy tears to people’s eyes’ as a bullet point on their resume, right?
