Custom family portrait illustration
9 Styles from whimsical to realistic
There is a great variety of styles when it comes to custom family portrait illustrations. They range from realistic to cartoony with plenty of styles to choose from for any taste. Of course, the style you choose for your family portrait should also depend on the occasion you’re commission the painting for. A more realistic style might be better for a wedding gift while a whimsical portrait might be better suited for a Christmas gift for wife or husband.
As an artist I’m constantly looking for inspiration. I spend many hours searching the internet for creative art. In my recent search for fun family portraits I’ve found a number of gems that I would love to share with you.
1. Creative way to represent a family
A family illustration doesn’t mean that your family has to be depicted with portraits. It could be objects that symbolize who you are as a family. This personalized family book print is one creative way to represent a family of readers. I, personally, love reading and in many ways I feel literature defines who I am as a person. Many of my friends feel the same. That being said, I believe there are lots of book worms out there who would love to have their family story told by a stack of books. Print by
2. A Family portrait doesn’t have to be detailed
While my own art is extremely detailed I have a lot of appreciation for simplified illustration styles. For example, the family portrait below by is just as lovely as the name of the shop suggests. The artist hand-paints her creation and personalizes them for each family. Her family portraits exude warmth. In my opinion, all the details is what makes them so cute. The family dog staring straight at the audience adds even more cuteness to this family illustration. I can picture it as a perfect gift for first time parents or as a cute Christmas gift for husband or wife.
3. Cartoon Family portrait
Some families take themselves seriously. Others don’t. Some people believe a custom family portrait has to be a realistic representation of the family. Others think outside the box and believe that more cartoony family portrait styles are a better fit for their family. I’ve seen quite a few cartoon style family illustrations online. I really like the family portrait style by . It’s simplicity really appeals to me. And, as an animal lover, I love how there is even a family pet featured in the painting.
4. Watercolor Family Portrait
Watercolor is my first love and I’m always drawn to watercolor paintings of all kinds. That’s why the family portrait below by really caught my eye when I saw it on Etsy. The painting looks like a fun family illustration out of a book. The brushstrokes look effortless, and the details (such as the fabric patterns) are stunning. A custom family portrait like this will make a great Christmas gift for the whole family. Also, I can totally see it as an awesome wedding anniversary gift. Love it!
5. Not your usual family portrait illustration + family home and pets
While we’re on the subject of watercolor I’m going to slip in one of my own paintings. While I refer to my custom illustrations as family trees, in essence they’re creative family portraits. I paint them in watercolor (of course!) and do some details in ink, metal markers and even gel pans. Each one of my custom family portraits reflects what the family is all about. I like to incorporate family members’ hobbies, family homes, and family pets into my illustrations. If you would like to order a family portrait of your own please visit the Shop page of this site.
6.Personalized Wooden Peg family Portrait with Pets
It’s awesome how creative humans are! We all think differently and that makes us creative in our own ways. I always marvel at the unusual mediums artists and craftspeople use in their work. Just how creative is a personalized family portrait by (below)? This adorable work is made from wooden pegs! What a clever idea, don’t you think? The artist painted so many details on such small surfaces. I think it is really amazing especially considering these surfaces aren’t even flat!
7. Custom Family Portrait on a Wood Slice
