Custom Family Tree illustration styled as a quilt

The majority of my wonderful clients are pretty open minded people to begin with.  When it comes to gift giving they are the type of people who think outside the box. They believe that their loved ones, be it parents, in-laws, etc. deserve a gift that is as unique and special as they are.  The best part about working with this type of people is that they allow me creative freedom.  They also trust my judgement. Which is every artist’s dream when it comes to creating paintings on commission.

While some of my clients have a good idea of what they want in their family tree painting, others leave everything up to me. Of course, I consult with them before I start working on their project. Sometimes my mind goes wild and I have a problem reigning my imagination in.  So I throw out my wild ideas and let my customers decide if they make sense to them or not.  I have recently came up with something pretty unusual for one of my family tree paintings, and as luck had it my client loved my proposal.

Unique 50th anniversary gift for a unique couple

In preparation for the painting I asked my client to tell me about her parents. Their love story melted my heart.  Although, there was quite an age gap between her parents it never stood in their way.  After 50 years of marriage they’re still very happy together.  Something to strive for, right?  Despite being 90 my client’s dad still works with his hands a lot, and him and his wife love remodeling houses together. My client’s mom also loves quilting.  They both play cards and lead an active lifestyle.  After hearing all this information I decided to do something different than most of the family tree paintings I create. The majority of my family trees are painted in a mostly realistic manner.  They’re set outside in their natural setting.

After taking into consideration my client’s parents’ love for remodeling and her mom’s passion for quilting I decided to set the illustration inside a home. I placed her parents on a couch facing each other holding cards in their hands as if they’re in a middle of a friendly game.  The tree itself with the names of the couple’s children and grandchildren I made to look like a quilt on a wall behind them.  Stitching and all!

I must say that although I deeply admire the skill and patience it takes to make a quilt I know very little about this craft.  So I did my research and found some cute quilts that truly inspired me. The ones that inspired me the most were the quilts that used fabrics with fun bright patterns. I used that idea for the family tree’s leaves making each leaf different.  Since the couple was originally from Massachusetts I also added a quilted landscape with the houses reminiscent of New England.
