Happy Clients, Happy Artist!
I wish I could describe what it feels like to create a one-of-a-kind family tree painting as an unforgettable gift for a couple’s wedding anniversary. When I’m painting I feel joyful. I don’t really stress. I simply feel honored that someone decided that my art would make a perfect anniversary gift for their parents, grandparents or in-laws.
Before I start painting I go through a little ritual. I ask the Universe to guide my hands and to allow creativity flow through me onto the canvas. While I always configure a plan in my head for a family tree painting beforehand, I usually get more ideas as soon as I start sketching. It’s usually cute unassuming details that the family will discover after looking at their family tree illustration for a while. That’s why I always ask my clients to give me as many little facts about their families as they can think of. That information just gives me more to work with.
The hidden gems are the key to a fun family portrait illustration
One of my favorite ‘hidden gems’ in this particular painting was the calendar hanging on the barn. My client shared with me that his father posed for a calendar when he was younger. He also send me that photo asking me to incorporate it into the painting. I decided that I will include it as a page of calendar, since that’s what it was originally. For an extra something special I placed it above the month of the couple’s wedding anniversary and encircled the day of their naturals with a red heart.
The best part of my job (bar none) is hearing back from my happy clients. In the case with this family tree, not only did I hear back from the family I painted it for, but I also watched a video of the couple being presented with their family tree painting. At one point in the video, the family talks about the calendar hanging on the bar and about the little red heart around the day of the wedding. After watching that part I couldn’t stop smiling for the rest of the evening. I felt happy to have created a special gift for people that I will never meet, but who nonetheless allowed me to be a part of a special moment in their lives.
Being let into someone else’s life and knowing that you made a family happy feels more amazing than the satisfaction of a job well done. It feels more like a privilege of being a witness to someone else’s happiness.
