Family Tree Paintings with Pakistani Roots

Each family tree I paint is an exciting project for me. I get to know people I most likely wouldn’t have ever met in real life, and I get to do something special for them. Not gonna lie. It feels good. Even after years and years of painting custom family trees I still consider each new artwork as an adventure.  Not only into someone’s life, but also geographically.

With most of my family trees I get to explore new places, and it’s always awesome when the couple I’m creating a painting for lives abroad. That’s when I also get to explore new cultures. If it weren’t for my job I doubt I would’ve learned as much about Pakistan as I have just trying to do my best creating something unique for my wonderful clients.

Anniversary gift for a lovely Pakistani couple

Family tree paintings are always a lot of fun to paint, but the more creative freedom I have the more fun I have as an artist. I love clients who have faith in my abilities and go along with my ideas no matter how crazy they are. One such client had enough trust in me even after I told him that I’m going to have different color paisley leaves on his family tree…  Going to place his parents in a boat…  And paint the tree itself coming out of water!

Let me explain! My client’s parents were a lovely couple from Pakistan celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Their favorite place to vacation is at a beautiful lake with colorful boats, and colorful buildings all around it. After seeing the photos of the lake I was so inspired by all the colors that I wanted to incorporate everything that I saw into the their family tree.  I also did research on Pakistani traditional art and that’s where the idea for the colorful paisley leaves came from.  Luckily for me, my client went along with my creative/crazy plan and I managed to pull it all together just in time for his parents’ anniversary.

Family Tree with Paisley Leaves influenced by Pakistani traditional art

I felt so enamored with the bright colors of the Pakistani folk art, as well as with paisley leaves that I simply couldn’t wait for someone to order a family tree from me for yet another Pakistani couple. Once again I got lucky when a young woman commissioned a family tree painting for her parents, and I found out they were originally from Pakistan.  While I made most of the painting fairly modern I was still able to give it “Pakistani look” by simply using bright-colored paisley leaves instead of ‘regular’ tree leaves. I also used a font for the names that was reminiscent of what Urdu (the official language of Pakistan) looks like.

Modern twist on family tree art

Some of my clients enjoy more traditional ethnic look for their family trees.  Others prefer their family trees to look more modern.  That being said, the majority of my clients do want to have some reference to their cultural roots or their country of origin.  That happens more often than not with married couples who come from different countries.  They see their personalized family tree paintings as future family heirlooms, and they want their children (and future ancestors) to know where they come from.

I tried to create a unique family tree for one such couple.  The wife was American, and the husband was originally from Pakistan.  To symbolize the wife’s American heritage I placed draped American flag on ‘her side’ of the painting. For her husband I did the same with Pakistani flag.
